“Thunder on the Horizon” builds that exciting feeling when you know something amazing is coming! This elementary/late elementary piece channels 80s rock anthem energy through dynamic patterns.

Built specifically for one-handed playing, this piece delivers full musical impact whether you’re working around temporary or permanent hand limitations. You can also use it to balance hand strength when one hand is weaker, master single-line reading as melodies move between clefs, or develop better keyboard navigation skills across multiple octaves.

Complete right-hand and left-hand versions with finger numbers are included.

“Thunder on the Horizon” Level:

“Thunder on the Horizon” creates hopeful and energetic moods. Perfect for piano players who love contemporary styles and self-expression. This elementary/late elementary piece highlights unique rhythmic patterns and chord bridges.

  • Mode: A Mixolydian (key signature)
  • Time signature: 4/4
  • Concepts: Shifting hand positions (including finger cross over), moving from cleft to clef (shown with dotted melody line), legato, eighth to dotted quarter note rhythms, chord bridges, diminuendo, ritardando, smallest note is a single eighth note

A Mixolydian mode brings that edgier, more rebellious sound than traditional Major. Perfect when you want to express yourself through music! The 80s rock anthem feel comes from that distinctive eighth note to dotted quarter note rhythm.

This rhythm pattern is uncommon at the elementary/late elementary level, making your playing sound more sophisticated. A ‘bridge’ section (like you would hear in this style of music) is built from chord bridges to add modern flair. The rhythms stay organized on strong beats, but the overall feel is completely different.

Eighth note passages weave around chords with lots of passing notes. You’ll experience an engaging mix of scale passages and broken chords. Simple dynamics throughout keep it manageable while honouring that rock style.

This piece includes two complete versions with fingering for both hands. Dotted lines show exactly how the melody travels between clefs.

“Thunder on the Horizon” Bonus:

All sheet music has original cover art.  “Thunder on the Horizon” includes Composer Notes that include mastery tips and “make it your own” suggestions to develop an individual interpretation.
