Discover percussive patterns in “The Storm Is Upon Us”, a dynamic piano solo. This piece is designed for teen and adult piano players. Explore interesting chords in this “sounds harder than it is” piece!
The rhythm of hail hitting everything in its path during a local massive hailstorm was my inspiration. “Hail Hit My House and Now I Have to Call My Insurance” was the original working title. Ultimately I opted for a shorter title so you, as the piano player, can imagine a storm you have experienced.
The Storm Is Upon Us Level:
“The Storm Is Upon Us” is an elementary-level piano solo. The challenge when composing was to convert the non-pattern rhythm of the hail storm into patterned rhythms. The 2/4 time signature creates a strong first beat and driving tempo to the piece.
- Mode: E minor (accidentals)
- Time Signature: 2/4
- Concepts: 2-note slurs with tie, sharps, staccato, accent, enclosed repeat signs, changing dynamics on repeats, swing style rhythm between hands, 3-note chords (one hand, then both hands)
Starting finger numbers and circled finger numbers to indicate hand position changes are included. Accidentals, written as sharps, are used rather than a key signature. Some students may prefer to learn the entire piece by rote so they avoid reading the accidentals on the page.
The smallest note in the rhythm is a tied eighth plus quarter note. This creates a swing rhythm that moves between the hands. It is best learnt by rote at this level.
This piece explores chords in many forms: 3-note chords (solid and broken), melody combining scale and chord notes, and hands playing 3-note harmonic chords simultaneously. The same chords are used throughout to create a fantastic opportunity to explore chords in their varied formats.
The Storm Is Upon Us Bonus:
All sheet music comes with original cover art. “The Storm Is Upon Us” comes with tips for mastering the piece.
